Preventive Dental Care

When it comes to protecting your teeth and gums, nothing is more important than preventive dental care. Preventive dental care takes place at home as well as with your dentist. Greater Boston Dental offers our patients a full range of preventive dental care options, including:

At Greater Boston Dental we offer complete oral exams with full mouth X-rays. A complete oral exam allows our staff to properly asses your dental needs.

A dental cleaning (prophylaxis) is recommended at least every six months to remove dental plaque and stains you're unable to remove yourself, as well as to check for signs of tooth decay and peridontal (gum) diseases

According to the American Cancer Society, more than 28,000 cases of oral cancer are diagnosed annually, with more than 7,000 of these cases resulting in death. Oral cancer may occur on the mouth, lips, tongue, gums, salivary glands, and throat.

For a definitive oral cancer diagnosis, you must see a dentist and a doctor. Your doctor and dentist will examine your mouth and evaluate your medical history to formulate an initial diagnose impression and treatment plan. If the resulting treatment plan does not effectively resolve the dental condition within two weeks, a biopsy of the affected area will be performed to test for possible cancer.

Oral cancer is diagnosed through a confirmed malignant biopsy and a clinical evaluation to identify the stage and grade of the cancer. The cancer may eventually spread to other areas of the mouth and body, resulting in secondary cancers that may yield even more serious consequences.

Digial X-rays enable dentists to look for signs of dental problems that are not visible to the naked eye, such as cavities between teeth and problems below the gum line. At Greater Boston Dental, we only use low-radiation digital X-rays in order to protect our patients.

If you don't take care of your teeth and properly manage your oral health, you may find yourself forking over thousands of dollars in restorative dental care. Did you know that a full mouth reconstruction can cost between $45,000 and $80,000? By practicing preventive dentistry, you can safeguard yourself from these exorbitant dental costs.

The most important prevention technique is brushing and flossing at least twice a day (or after every meal) to remove dental plaque, a film-like coating that forms on your teeth. If not removed, plaque can build up and produce dental tartar, a hardened, sticky substance with acid-producing bacteria that cause tooth decay and lead to gum disease.

Our staff will instruct our patients on how to best care for their teeth and gums at home.

Sealants

For more than 30 years now, sealants have offered a protective plastic coating that covers the surfaces of teeth to help prevent tooth decay.

Sealants can last for many years, but they should be checked regularly and assessed for possible re-application.

Flouride

Fluoride makes teeth stronger to help prevent initiation of dental caries and tooth decay resulting from acid contained in sugars and the breakdown of carbohydrates.

Topical Fluorides: These fluorides strengthen teeth by providing better resistance to decay. This category includes toothpastes and home mouth rinses, as well as gels, foams and rinses incorporated during your dental visits.
